The Panthers Allowed 59 Points and Are Now Road Favorites

Carolina allowed 59 points on Sunday, the most in franchise history, according to the Associated Press. Three days later, the Panthers are road favorites in Atlanta. BetMGM opened the Falcons at -1.5 on Sunday night, the betting news site VegasInsider reported, and by early Wednesday Carolina was laying 2.5 at most major books. That’s four points of movement in the Panthers Falcons odds since the open.

The betting has gone the same way. RotoWire’s Tuesday report on DraftKings splits had the Panthers drawing 86% of spread bets and 83% of the money, back when that book still listed them at -1.5. The money and the tickets agree, and our page on public betting trends covers the difference between the two.

On Tuesday we noted that BetMGM already had Carolina favored while DraftKings and bet365 still had Atlanta. That disagreement didn’t last. All eight books on VegasInsider’s board had the Panthers favored by Wednesday morning, seven of them at 2.5. DraftKings had Carolina at -155 on the moneyline and Atlanta at +130, which works out to about a 58% win chance for the Panthers once the book’s margin comes out.

Atlanta’s Quarterback Room Did the Moving

The explanation is in Atlanta’s quarterback room. Tua Tagovailoa missed the opener with an oblique injury and Michael Penix Jr. is still working back from the ACL he tore last season, so third-string Cooper Rush started in Pittsburgh. He went 12-of-22 for 143 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in a 20-13 loss, and on Monday head coach Kevin Stefanski said he had no update on either Tagovailoa or Penix.

The Sunday-night opener was set after that game, so Rush’s performance was already in the number. What the open couldn’t know was whether he would start again, and three days without an answer from Atlanta have probably pushed the market toward assuming he will.

Nothing official has changed since then. The Falcons fan site The Falcoholic reported that Atlanta’s Wednesday media schedule put Rush in the slot set aside for the starting quarterback. Chris Lindstrom, the Falcons’ All-Pro guard, is also in the concussion protocol after leaving the opener.

Carolina’s offense did its part in the loss, which helps explain why books were willing to go this far. Bryce Young threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another, according to the AP, and the Panthers have won the last three meetings with Atlanta, per the team’s site. The total backs that up. BetMGM opened it at 44 after Carolina’s 96-point game, VegasInsider reported, and it sat at 43.5 across the board on Wednesday, so books aren’t pricing a shootout against this Falcons offense.

Week 1 Already Tested This Read

Last week the same depth chart pulled bettors toward Pittsburgh. Borgata sportsbook director Tom Gable told VegasInsider the Steelers were one of the most popular Week 1 sides because of Atlanta’s injuries, and the odds site SportsBettingDime described Pittsburgh as a public favorite once Tagovailoa was ruled out. The Steelers won 20-13. T.J. Watt’s pick-six early in the fourth quarter put them up 20-10, and that return accounted for seven of their points. The public side won, and a defensive touchdown did a good share of the work.

So a mechanical fade of this week’s 86% runs straight into the same depth chart. The other side of that bet is Rush, whose last start included a pick-six, in a game where the public’s read and the injury report say the same thing. The case for fading the public rests on crowds overreacting to a story, and this crowd is reacting to an injury report.

What Could Make This Move Too Big

Carolina’s defense is the first problem. Chicago piled up 552 yards, per game recaps from Yardbarker and NCFootballNews, and Atlanta still has Bijan Robinson, who produced 173 yards from scrimmage in Pittsburgh with Rush at quarterback. A four-point swing asks a defense coming off the most points it has ever allowed to hold up on the road.

The quarterback news could also turn. Penix practiced fully all of last week, according to the Panthers’ own preview of the Falcons, and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that his original target was Week 2 or 3, though Rapoport added on Monday that this week might be too soon. If Atlanta names Penix or clears Tagovailoa, much of the stated reason for the move goes away.

Panthers Falcons Odds After Wednesday’s Announcement

Atlanta’s Wednesday availability and injury report settle the first question. A named Rush start, with the number holding at 2.5 or reaching 3, would confirm that the move was about the depth chart. A Penix start would likely push the Panthers Falcons odds back toward Atlanta.

We’ll add the closing number and the result to the Week 2 log from Tuesday’s post, whichever way it goes. Kickoff is 1 p.m. Eastern on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
